Activity Dependent Control of (Re)-Myelination

In vertebrates, the fast conduction of action potentials along axons relies on myelinated internodes. In the CNS, myelin is produced by oligodendrocytes. Compelling evidences indicate that oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) can sense neuronal activity, highlighting the vital importance of axon-OPC interactions in the regulation of the myelination process. However, the mechanisms underlying activity dependent control of myelination and remyelination remain poorly understood. This lab rotation proposal project aims at exploring the role of axon-OPC synapses using cutting-edge 2-photon microscopy, calcium imaging and optogenetic tools in zebrafish models.
