The LaPsyDÉ is one of the few lab in France conducting basic researches from childhood to adulthood that combine (1) integrated behavioral approaches of cognitive development in different domains (object perception, numerical cognition, categorization, reasoning, decision making and creativity) and (2) multimodal brain imaging (anatomical and functional MRI, high density EEG) of brain development, especially in normal preschoolers and school-age children. Our fundamental researches have also direct applications, in particular in education.

Our team is interested in understanding the processes underlying the formation of new memories.  The hippocampus is a brain region that has long been considered to be central in memory storage and retrieval. Networks of inhibitory neurons in the hippocampus are critical for hippocampal activity, and play a central role in learning.

This research team is dedicated to the development of optical techniques based on wave front engineering microscopy.Traditional optical systems modify excitation light patterns through the use of lenses, diaphragms, curved mirrors, gratings, or optical fibers. They are typically limited to the generation of simple patterns (generally of circular symmetry) which are relatively difficult to change during the course of an experiment.

Starting from human genetics, our team isolates some genes involved in intellectual disability and others disorders of the mentalspectrum. Together with biologists and clinicians from AP-HP, we search in patient’s genome for variants (Copy Number Variationand nucleotide polymorphism) in genes encoding synaptic proteins. In addition, we try to understand their pathophysiologicalmechanisms using both molecular and cellular approaches on mouse and human cell models.

Our research focuses on the interactions between neurons and glial cells in the central nervous system of rodents. Glial cells are engaged in bi-directional interactions with neurons and contribute actively to the modulation of neuronal network activities. Three main research programs structure the current activity of the team. The first one concerns the astrocytic control of neuronal activity. We have demonstrated that astrocytes synchronize the activity of neuron ensembles by releasing glutamate and GABA.
